Thrift Savings Plan Breach

In a briefing earlier today with Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board Executive Director Greg Long, NTEU was told that all TSP participants affected by the recent “hacking” of one of the computers belonging to a third party service provider used in support of the TSP have been notified by mail.  If you wish to double-check your account, you can call TSP-YOU-FRST (1-877-968-3778).  You will need your TSP account number.

As I reported in an earlier chapter presidents’ memo in April of this year, the FBI informed the Thrift Board that one of the computers supporting its operations had been “hacked” and that personal data of approximately 123,000 participants, both current and retired employees, had been stolen.  Between April 10 and May 25, the Thrift Board received over 4,000 files from the FBI.  The Board compiled the information from the files, set up a contract with a credit protection company for the affected participants, and sent out a letter to each individual named in the files.  If you did not receive a letter from the Thrift Board telling you that your information was stolen, then you are most likely not affected by the breach.  To double-check, you may call the hotline set up by the TSP listed above.  The Board’s goal at this point is to ensure that such a breach does not reoccur.  It has already made changes to its security and contemplates future upgrades. The FBI is continuing to pursue the hackers.

In this day and age, it is important to always check your statements on any financial accounts you may have.  It is the best way to make sure your accounts remain safe.  If you have further questions about this incident, please contact Cathy Ball in the Legislation Department at 202-572-5522, extension 8067.
